How to Create a Calm Corner at Home or in the Classroom

What is a calm corner?
A calm corner is a safe space designed to support calm and regulation. These spaces can be created at home, in the classroom, or even in the community. A calm corner can include dim lighting, fidget tools, weighted blankets and stuffed animals, highly preferred activities, and more.
The goal of a calm corner is to give children (and adults!) the tools they need to self-regulate before a meltdown begins. Oftentimes, we miss the signals our children give us that tell us they need a break or are feeling overwhelmed. While a calm corner can still be helpful during a meltdown, it can be challenging to redirect a child to use their calming tools when they are already in the meltdown phase.
How to create a calm corner at home or in the classroom
You don’t need a large, dedicated space to create a successful calm corner. A calm-down basket or bag can be just as effective. Fill it with your child’s favorite self-regulation tools, such as fidgets, noise-reducing headphones, a favorite book, and/or a favorite toy. Keep this basket in an easily accessible space, and let your child know they can access the basket whenever they notice themselves becoming overwhelmed.
Teachers and parents can introduce the calm corner (or basket) as a positive, safe option for kids to use as needed. The goal is to help children recognize their body signals and notice when they might need to use their calming tools or take a break in a calm, quiet space to support their self-regulation.
Are calm corners just for kids?
Calm corners are not only for children! Adults need calming, self-regulating tools and activities, too! Calming tools for adults can include going for a walk, drinking cold water through a straw, eating a favorite meal or crunchy snack, chewing gum, lifting weights, or going to a quiet space at home or work. Calming tools should be specific and personalized to each person so they are most impactful.
